Album Every Day: March 2022
For the past month, I've listened to a new album every day. The aim is to expand horizons and find good new music. Here's a short summary of what I liked. For a detailed look, the full list is at the bottom.
Top 5 Albums
Everything Now by Arcade Fire
Everything Now genuinely surprised me and overall was a consistent record with a few standout tracks, Signs of Life, Good God Damn, and Creature Comfort (which made it to my top 5, more on that later). Oddly enough the sound reminded me more of The Killers than what I remember from their earlier success with Funeral.
Obsidian by Baths
Overall I found Obsidian to be the most consistent album of the bunch. The music is powerfully depressing and human. Miasma Sky, No Eyes, and Earth Death stood out. The haunting atmosphere throughout makes this distinct among this month listens.
Pink Lemonade by Closure in Moscow
Pink Lemonade is a competent progressive rock record that's similar in flavor to acts like The Dear Hunter, Circa Survive, and Coheed and Cambria. I particularly appreciated the juicy tones on the guitar and lyrics on the record. A more conceptual tac is taken here from the other albums on this list. I liked Happy Days, Neoprene Byzantine, and The Church of the Technochrist. These tracks tended to dip into technofuturist themes that I've enjoyed since hearing 2112 by Rush.
Pixel Bath by Jean Dawson
First of two fairly innovative albums is Pixel Bath. While I appreciated Power Freak and Clear Bones, the main track I like out of this is 06 Burst. The back half of the album really carries here. Noisy bravado wins the day.
eel by torr
Finally, the album that appeals the most to my personal taste, eel. Overall I'm seeing emo going electronic. The use of acoustic guitar and electronic work together to get some soul and energy working together. From what I've seen artists in this vein are still fairly small but acts like midwxst, glaive, and alden seem to be having substantial success. I expect this genre to get a lot more popular.
Top 5 Tracks
99 by RILEY THE MUSICIAN
99 has powerful alt energy and I'm here for it. Youthful confidence over electric grooves makes a track built for driving fast with the windows down.
06 Burst by Jean Dawson
06 Burst is aggressive, crunchy, and properly arrogant. The tempo and lyrics are absolutely proper for walk out music. Definitely going to take the mantra of, "I don't keep score, I keep scoring."
Earth Death by Baths
Absolutely haunting atmospheric suffocation pulled into the earth. Listening to this I picture a man falling, catching glances of the circles of hell as he falls ultimately unto complete nothingness. The flame dies here.
leave by torr
Overall I really enjoy this EP with leave barely beating out dammit as my favorite track off it. Powerful alt vibes, this ain't no normcore party and I'm an emo kid forever. The more atmospheric lamentations of gifted kid syndrome leading into a spirit of desire and adventure gives a sense of grandiosity and hope.
Creature Comfort by Arcade Fire
Overall in this I'm trying to highlight what's good instead of some concrete ranking, but I found Creature Comfort to be the best track I listened to this month. "God make me famous, if you can't, just make it painless" is an absolute killer line and throughout the song the lyrics are fantastic. Everyone's lost and dealing with pain but still aspiring. Love to see it.
Wrapping Up
Daily new albums seems to have had the intended effect of expanding my music library. Writing about the experience is also good practice while dealing with a relatively straightforward topic. I intend to continue this practice into next month. When I started this, there wasn't the intention to make it a post, so in the future, a playlist will be included.
